Chapter 8

“Let me try to understand this.” Spencer Shepard, the Honey Springs sheriff, stood in front of me, shielding my view of Tom Foster’s body. “You were standing on the balcony of a guest room at the Bee Happy Resort when you watched someone in a trench coat and hood pull a gun out and shoot our victim?”

“Tom Foster.” My head bobbled around on my shoulders to try to look past Spencer, but he did a little dance back and forth so I couldn’t see. “I know him. Well, sorta know him. He has been to the Bean Hive the past couple of days, and he’s a writer for the Healthy Women’s Magazine. He is…” I swallowed hard. “Was,” I corrected myself, “going to do an article on the Bean Hive, though I don’t really think he liked my coffee because he called it burnt.”

“I’m guessing you didn’t like his review of your coffee?” Spencer gave me that look.

“No. I didn’t shoot him.” I scoffed, rolling my eyes. “I was at the resort, and plenty of people saw me and talked to me, including Big Bib, who drove me back in the boat.”

“I’m not saying you killed him.” Spencer shook his head and took out his little notebook where he kept notes during his investigations.

One of these days, I just might take that notebook and smack him upside the head because he was only driven by the facts of the case and not the hearsay.

“But there’s apparently a lot of people who didn’t like him,” I said in a hushed whisper so the crowd that was gathering around us didn’t hear just in case the killer was standing near.

I’d heard how killers that hadn’t been caught often went back to the scene of the crime just to see what was going on. Sick, really, but a reality.

“Who are they?” Spencer asked.

“I don’t know, really.” I knew this wasn’t going to sit well with the sheriff. “I overheard Tom talking to someone in the woods of the resort when Crissy Lane came up to me. Well, not really talking.” My thoughts were all over the place. “They were arguing.”

My mind was a jumbled mess. Coffee. I knew I needed a coffee to get me all straightened out.

“Crissy Lane and Tom were arguing?” he asked as he stopped writing and looked up at me. “Did he give her a bad review?”

“No. I don’t know, but not him and Crissy. Tom and someone else. Crissy interrupted my…” I bit my lip.

“Your eavesdropping?” Shepard’s brow cocked.

“Something like that.” I sighed and noticed Kevin Roberts, the Honey Springs coroner, had walked past us, pushing the gurney. “What else is going on? Kevin is looking at Tom’s body funny.”

“Why would you say that?” Spencer acted like this was my first time seeing a murder and doing the professional cop thing.

“Really, Spencer? Are you seriously acting like this?” My lips puckered in annoyance. “I’ve seen people with gunshots before and helped you out. Why is Kevin so interested in Tom’s face?”

I clearly saw Tom get shot in the torso.
